A Bit of Our Story
Mrs Maria Berg took over a single storey, four-roomed hotel in the late 1880’s known as The Commercial Hotel. The present two-storey brick building was erected in 1928 next to the original, which later became storage and staff quarters.
Over time, many licensees have led its legacy: John Kean (1902); George Admans (1904); Alfred Clark (1905); Charles Pratt (1906); Joan Batt (1907); Patrick J O’Connor (1908–1909); Mrs Georgina J Hutchison (1913–1914). In 1926 it was sold to Mr Sargent, who rebuilt its structure in 1928. Later owners include Albert Le Feure (1929); William Howard Foote; Ethel Ruby Gillespie (1940); Sarah Elizabeth Jane Wright (1940); S V Delaney & A L Windram (1940); Delia Ellen McIntyre & Rita Elizabeth Gould (1943); Alan Reginal Renwick & Francis Henry Clarke (1949); Lydia May Rooney (1949); W L Foote (1951).
More recently: the Hollands (1963); Betty & Victor Leski; Dot Martin & husband; Ken Knight; Peter & Carol Wyllie; and in 2011 Billy & Jodie Neilson with Nathan Blackwell took a partnership on the licence. “Stumpy” has been a mainstay of the hotel for many years as well.
